"Unidentified Network" problem
This problem seems nearly ubiquitous and it is in need of attention from the MS boys ...I'm running a computer wired to my network with Vista Home Premium ... I first noticed that after sleeping the computer, it would come up connected to "Unidentified Network" ... it appears that when this happens Vista is hardwired to declare it a 'Public' network with local only access. You can change the setting of "Unidentified Network" to 'Private' but the hardwired settings in the firewall still only allow local access. This means that you can ping anything on your local subnet but cannot send or receive traffic off the local subnet (read - no Internet!). Turning off the firewall does not change the local restriction - go figure. When in this state a DHCP renew from a command line will cure the ill and restore connection to the proper network location (in my case there is only one location and that is set to 'Private' with local and Internet access). It is also the case that merely unplugging the ethernet wire and replugging it will send Vista into "Unidentified Network" hell. So, seems to me with this data the MS guys who know just what the code for DHCP renew does can solve the issue, or at least tell us what to do.My answer is to set my power settings to not sleep the machine, i.e. - keep the damn link up at any cost. Heaven help me when I end up having to run around and 'fix' this recurring issue on hundreds of machines at some 'gigacorp' network somewhere! One other note: unbinding IPV6 from the NIC did not change anything for me as some others in these forums have reported.Any other comments or data out there on this annoying issue?UPDATE:'Recommended' update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938979 solved this issue for me.
